Hi, I'm TARA

A Spring Engagement Session at Water Users Recreation Site in the Salt River – Angela & Eric

Couple embracing and looking back at the camera towards sunset at the Salt River basin

Arizona has many iconic locations, but there are few locations as captivating as the Salt River Basin on the Eastern edge of Phoenix. As a Phoenix wedding photographer with many location options it is one of my first go-to’s. It offers a unique blend of rugged mountains, flowing water, and golden sunsets that provide the perfect backdrop for an engagement session. I was introduced to Angela and Eric through Sandy with In Awe Weddings. She always knows how to connect me with the best couples in Arizona.

Why this Phoenix Wedding Photographer Loves the Salt River Basin

As the sun begins to dip behind the distant mountains, the Salt River Basin transforms into a breathtaking canvas of colors. The desert terrain, though arid and rugged, has a soft, romantic feel in the late afternoon light. The river gently meanders through the landscape, reflecting the vibrant colors of the sky. A few scattered cacti and the vast, open expanse of desert stretches endlessly in every direction. The quiet beauty of the area makes it the ideal spot for Angela and Eric’s engagement photos. It’s not every day you get to capture love amid such wild beauty.

A Playful Connection

From the moment we begin our session, its clear that Angela and Eric had a special bond. Their chemistry is undeniable— they are playful and are down for some “sexy” poses. We talk about their wedding plans. Why they chose their venue. What does the dress look like? Do you have all your vendors? As we walk along the desert paths we stop to catch perfect light. With a mix of fun prompts and careful direction they are a joy to photograph. I can already tell their wedding day is going to be incredible.

I asked Eric to pick Angela up and spin her around. Most couples are hesitant at first but Eric had no problem grabbing her and having some fun. They go along with every suggestion I have. I love the natural connection they have and the way he stands off camera admiring his soon-to-be bride.

A Perfect Match: Neutral Outfits Against a Desert Canvas

Angela took my suggestions and curated perfectly neutral outfits for each of them. Her creme colored lace dress blends effortlessly with the desert. Eric, in a simple but stylish white button-down shirt and khaki pants, complements her. I especially love their second outfit. Her brown leather mini skirt and white shirt with boots gives a sleek modern cowgirl vibe. And again, Eric compliments her outfit with a brown button down shirt. The simplicity of their outfits allows the focus to remain on them.

As the sun begins to set, the golden light baths everything in a warm glow. The reflections off the river made the scene feel almost surreal. The diffused light allows us to shoot from any angle with incredible light and views. Angela’s golden hair simply glows.

Golden Hour Magic

I love the river so much because it allows my couples to explore together. The stunning mountain cliffs and river are not something most Phoenicians experience everyday. If you are lucky, the Salt River horses may even make an appearance! Keep in mind that the river tends to be very low in the winter. If you are wanting to get into the river it moves slow which makes it a great option with little ones.

While we did not dip our toes during this session, we did get some spectacular views of Four Peaks in the distance. The colors of Fall still on the trees created a golden glow

For Angela and Eric, the sunset wasn’t just a beautiful part of the session—it was a metaphor for the journey they were about to embark on together. Their playfulness, their natural chemistry, and the stunning desert surroundings made this engagement session one I won’t soon forget.

I am so glad Angela and Eric chose this location for their Engagement Session. They have the most iconic Arizona images for their upcoming wedding at Seville Country Club. As a wedding photographer in Phoenix, I find myself in the desert often. Somehow it never gets old. The light changes throughout the year and every couple brings their own unique flare to every session.
